Edward L Ryerson Conservation Area
What to expect: Edward L. Conservation is 565 acres, with over half dedicated as an Illinois Nature Preserve, which gives it even extra protection for the nearly 600 species of flowering plants and more than 150 species of birds. Two rare ecosystems, flatwoods and a floodplain forest can be found here. Our trail takes us along the Des Plaines River and into the heavily wooded forest as we watch for the wildflowers & listen for the migrating birds. Because this forest is in a floodplain, the spring rains often bring muddy trails. Please be prepared with waterproof boots. Our hike will be level, and a little over 3 miles.
During the hike, there will be a 15-minute part of the trail that is a silent walk, so that each person can more fully appreciate the sounds of nature.
